THE ULTRASONIC METHOD

The ultrasonic method can also be used, with some variations, to assess the quality of concrete aggregate after many years, effectively monitoring the evolution of its condition over time. In this way, it is possible to:

– Evaluate the uniformity of the concrete
– Detect cracks or voids
– Assess changes in the properties of concrete over time
– Identify potential casting defects

The modes of ultrasonic pulse transmission are essentially three:

– Direct Transmission: Transducers are placed opposite each other with the concrete in between
– Semi-direct Transmission: Transducers are placed on two adjacent faces
– Indirect or Surface Transmission: Transducers are placed on the same face

Below is an explanatory diagram:

For each portion of the structure where the concrete appears uniform (distance-time graph represented by a straight line), the criterion in the table can be applied.
